freerange fennel

July 22, 2010

Wow, look at that crop of fennel. Prolific, to say the least. This shot was taken at my eye height.

The most amazing thing about this sky-reaching fennel is the location…

…yes, it was in a vacant lot. I pass this lot every week while heading to the Beehive Market in Northwest Berkeley. The vacant lot is at the Southwest corner of San Pablo and Hearst, if you’d like to see it on google maps.

The week following my little photo-shoot I noticed the distinct smell of fennel wafting through the air on San Pablo. It had all been cut down. I’m not sure which was more amazing; a lot full of beautiful culinary herbs, or the wonderful smell created after someone decided it was unsightly.
